Yes, you most definitely can register online and download the software directly to your computer. The disks are not a necessity, but usually advisable in case of any future need to reinstall everything. Be aware, however, that even if you download from the site, you will still have to pay for both the software AND the monthly fee. That is the way of Warcraft. Unfortunately, there is not much you can do to reduce the cost in that regard, although if you check places that sell the game, Amazon.com does, look for "Warcraft Battle Chest". It has both the original game and the first expansion pack ‘Burning Crusade’ and it is often a lot cheaper than buying the disks separately. You would still have to purchase WotLK to complete the set and get up to level 80 with any characters that you set up.

Either way you have to pay for each expansion, for example, after your trial you need to have the first WoW pack, you can buy this online or you can buy it in store, both come with a free month. However, for TBC and LTK, you don’t get a free month and you will need to continue to pay your monthly fee as well as the price of the expansions.
